tep into the mysterious world of the ancient Chachapoya civilization on this unforgettable full-day adventure. This journey combines breathtaking landscapes, fascinating archaeological discoveries, and authentic cultural encounters. From the iconic cliffside sarcophagi of Karajía to the hidden underground world of the Quiocta caves, this experience offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and local traditions.
Description After breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cocachimba and begin our journey toward the remote archaeological site of Karajía. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the history and worldview of the Chachapoya culture, known for their unique funerary practices.
Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic 30 to 40-minute walk through the Andean landscape until you reach a viewpoint overlooking the impressive Karajía sarcophagi. These striking, two-meter-tall clay figures stand perched on a nearly inaccessible cliff, silently guarding the remains of ancient warriors. Their mysterious presence and intricate geometric designs make them one of the most remarkable burial sites in Peru.
After exploring the site, you will hike back to Cruzpata, followed by a well-deserved lunch at a local home, Casa del Chocho. Here, your host will share the story behind traditional dishes prepared with fresh, organic, and seasonal ingredients, offering a genuine taste of the region.
In the afternoon, continue to the Quiocta caves, a fascinating limestone cavern system once used by the Chachapoya people. As you explore this underground world, you will encounter impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as archaeological remains that reveal the spiritual significance of the site.
At the end of the tour, you will continue your journey to Chachapoyas. Dinner is not included.
