Kuelap Fortress PhotoKuelap Fortress Photo

Discover one of northern Peru’s most remarkable archaeological treasures: Kuélap. Built by the Chachapoya culture around 800 A.D., this extraordinary fortress rises above the clouds at over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft), offering a unique blend of history, mystery, and breathtaking views of the surrounding cloud forest.

On this experience, you will travel by road through scenic Andean landscapes toward the village of Kuélap. From there, enjoy a guided walk of approximately 30 minutes up to the ancient citadel. Along the way, you’ll immerse yourself in a destination that remains off the beaten path, rich in culture and natural beauty.

At the indicated time we will pick you up from the Chachapoyas airport to make the tour to Kuelap. As the cable car is closed for maintenance on this day, we will go by car through Nogalcucho until we reach the village of Kuelap from where we will walk approximately 30 minutes to the Llacta de Kuelap.

Kuelap, the most important archaeological site in northern Peru, was built by the Chachapoya culture around 800 A.D. It is renowned for its monumental stone structures that span 6 hectares atop Cerro Barreta at over 3,000 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, you can appreciate its connection to the natural surroundings of the montane or cloud forest.

Box lunch included.

Level of difficulty: Light / moderate. The excursions to Kuelap (2 hours 30 minutes of walking), require good physical condition. We recommend that seniors with heart conditions, individuals who are overweight, or those with limiting health issues consult their doctor.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking sneakers (the trail can be uneven and slightly steep)
  • Light jacket or windbreaker (weather can change quickly in the cloud forest)
  • Rain gear or poncho (especially during the rainy season)
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small backpack for personal items
  • Camera or smartphone

If you aren’t used to altitude, it’s also a good idea to bring some snacks and stay well hydrated, as Kuélap sits above 3,000 meters.
