This scenic train ride passes lovely rivers, Inca terraces, and snowy mountains. It's a fantastic way to see some of the prettiest landscapes in all of Peru.
The Expedition has comfy seats and big windows. The seats are arranged in groups of four that face each other, which is great for passengers who are traveling together. There are racks above the seats where you can place luggage, and the train has air conditioning and heating. Andean music is sometimes played from speakers, creating a cheerful atmosphere.
This train departs from the Poray station, which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cusco. The ride to Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu, lasts about three hours. Travelers can easily combine this train ride with tours of Machu Picchu.
Between January 2 and April 30, 2018, PeruRail will operate the Bimodal Service (Bus + Train), a service that combines bus and train travel, departing and returning to Cusco City. Passengers using the Expedition bimodal service (Expedition 33) board a private bus at Wanchaq Station, 5 minutes away from Cusco’s historic center, and arrive to Ollantaytambo Station. From here, passengers board the train and head to their final destination: Machu Picchu Station. The return journey is the same in reverse (Expedition 34). For additional information regarding the service and a route map, please visit Peru Rail's website for the most up-to-date tools and resources.

This was my first train experience. I enjoyed the journey to the city of Aguas Calientes via train. A major part of any adventure is the journey itself so I was very pleased with the comfort, friendly staff, and the over-all ambiance of the train. It is a great way to begin the quest to Machu Picchu.
