Watamu
Watamu rests on a small headland that separates the Blue Lagoon from Watamu Bay, a setting that concentrates several white‑sand beaches and offshore coral formations within the Watamu Marine National Park. The town lies about 105 km north of Mombasa and 15 km south of Malindi on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, and its population was around 30 000 in 2020. Tourism and fishing drive the local economy, and the community belongs to Kilifi County.
More about Watamu
Along the shoreline visitors encounter a string of distinct spots: Garoda Beach, Turtle Bay, Blue Lagoon Bay, Watamu Bay, Ocean Breeze, Kanani reef and Jacaranda beach. All are encompassed by the marine park, which the Kenyan Wildlife Service manages with support from the Watamu Marine Association—a coalition that includes Turtle Bay, Hemingways, Ocean Sports, Arocha Kenya, Lonno Lodge, the Mida Community Conservation group, Watamu Boat Operators, Safari Sellers and a women’s group. The protected reefs make the area one of the best snorkeling and diving locations on the East African coast, allowing swimmers to glide over vibrant coral structures while marine life thrives beneath the surface.
Just inland, the ruins of Gedi (also known as Gede) rise near the town, offering a glimpse of Swahili‑culture remnants that contrast with the modern beach scene. The combination of a headland‑bound coastline, a formally protected marine environment and nearby historic ruins defines Watamu as a uniquely layered destination on Kenya’s shoreline.
