Jinja

At the point where the Nile emerges from Lake Victoria, the city of Jinja marks the river’s source on the lake’s north shore in Uganda’s Eastern Region. Founded by British settlers in 1901, it grew around the dramatic waterway that once featured the Ripon Falls before the 1954 Owen Falls Dam raised the lake level. The name derives from the local word for “the stones,” a reference to the flat rocks that once lined the falls.

More about Jinja

Ernst May, the German architect who also planned Kampala, laid out Jinja’s streets in 1948, creating neighbourhood units that later prompted a slum‑clearance program displacing more than a thousand residents in the 1950s. The dam’s construction submerged both the original falls and the “Flat Rocks,” reshaping the landscape that early explorer John Hanning Speke described as a scene of roaring water, leaping fish, and hippos lounging nearby. During the 1978–79 Uganda–Tanzania War, the city briefly served as Idi Amin’s proclaimed capital before Tanzanian forces entered on 22 April 1979, greeted by cheering civilians.

Today visitors can launch white‑water rafts from the Nile’s source, try bungee jumping over the river, or watch the flow past the Bujagali Power Station, a hydroelectric plant 8 km north that supplies 250 megawatts. Since 2015 the Nyege Nyege Festival animates Discovery Beach in the nearby suburb of Njeru, adding a seasonal cultural pulse. The convergence of the world’s longest river, a historic dam, and active adventure sites makes Jinja a uniquely tangible point where geography and history intersect.
