Places you'll stay
Entebbe
Entebbe first entered global headlines when an Israeli rescue operation freed more than 100 hostages at its international airport in 1976. The city sits on a peninsula that reaches into Lake Victoria, about 36 kilometres southwest of Kampala in Uganda. It once served as the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda before independence in 1962, and it still houses State House, the official office and residence of the Ugandan president. Entebbe’s blend of diplomatic history and lakeside setting gives it a character that few other Ugandan towns share.
Kibale
Kibale National Park draws global attention for its habituated chimpanzee communities that allow close observation of the species in the wild. The park lies in western Uganda and protects a moist evergreen rainforest that stretches across 766 square kilometres. Established formally in 1993 after an earlier designation in 1932, it forms part of a larger forested landscape that links directly with Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Bwindi Forest
BwindiForest is the only place where regular, close‑up encounters with mountain gorillas are possible, drawing wildlife enthusiasts from every continent. The forest forms the core of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 that straddles the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Local Batwa communities manage several of the park’s outreach programmes, linking conservation with cultural preservation.
Arusha
Arusha is a city in Northern Tanzania located in the foothills of Mount Meru, at an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,400 m). Despite its close proximity to the equator, the climate in Arusha is temperate and comfortable year round. Arusha is the gateway to some of the best-known safari destinations in Africa, including the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park. There are also incredible treks to take up neighboring Mount Kilimanjaro.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is best known for its magnificent baobab trees, massive herds of elephants and towering termite mounds. The park is named for the Tarangire River, which is the main source of water for wildlife in the Tarangire ecosystem during the dry season. From June to November, as the migratory animals return to the park, impressive numbers of wildlife congregate along the banks of the river. At the height of the dry season, the quality of game viewing can rival that of the Serengeti.
Karatu
Karatu’s bright red soil is a striking feature which dominates the surrounding landscape. In the past, the cool climate, fertile red soil, and rolling hills surrounding Karatu made the lands around Karatu popular with German colonial settlers and farmers. Today, Karatu still offers magnificent views of the Ngorongoro highlands and is the gateway for visitors heading to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959 as a multiple land use area that protects wildlife and gives a space for semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists to practice traditional livestock grazing after they were relocated from the Serengeti National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers approximately 3,200 square miles (8,300 square km) of the Serengeti ecosystem.
Central Serengeti
It is here in the Central Serengeti that the Serengeti plains gradually transform into undulating hills and woodlands that dominate the Western and Northern Serengeti. The main attraction of the Central Serengeti is the beautiful Seronera River Valley, home to a great diversity of resident wildlife due to its unique ecological niche as a transitional zone where two distinctly different habitats, the plains and woodlands, merge and various species of wildlife from both habitats can coexist.
