Tacna

The surrounding landscape is desert, with only a few fertile pockets near the Andes. The Caplina River threads the valley, while no other watercourse crosses the province. According to the Köppen system the climate is classified as desert (BWk/BWh), producing clear skies and low rainfall that shape daily life and architecture.

Prominent monuments cluster around the historic centre. The arch of the Alto de la Alianza Monumental Complex and the Tacna Parabolic Arch frame the plaza, each recalling the city’s role in Peru’s independence and the War of the Pacific. A neo‑renaissance Cathedral stands opposite the Courthouse, its façade reflecting 19th‑century design. Nearby, the Alameda Bolognesi offers a shaded promenade lined with trees, while the caves of Toquepala, located on the city’s outskirts, have yielded some of the oldest human remains discovered in Peru.
