Are credit cards accepted in Peru?

Credit cards can be used in Peru, especially in large cities, where you can purchase most items with a credit card. Upscale hotels, restaurants, and shops will all accept credit cards. Visa is the easiest credit card to use, altough some places also accept American Express and MasterCard.

In small towns and more rural parts of Peru, however, you may only be able to pay in cash. Bring cash with you when you travel to these places.

Before traveling abroad, we recommended contacting your bank to let them know where you will be traveling. This way your bank won’t freeze your credit card when it sees transactions made in a foreign country. It is also advisable to check with your credit card company to see if there are additional charges for international transactions, including ATM fees.
