El cementerio de Chauchilla ofrece una fascinante visión arqueológica de cómo los Nazca protegían sus muertos. Las tumbas abiertas le permiten admirar los restos antiguos en reposo, adornados con galas funerarias. Algunas han sido saqueadas o dañadas por ladrones, pero se han hecho esfuerzos para restaurar cuidadosamente el sitio.
Los Nazca comenzaron a enterrar a las personas en el cementerio de Chauchilla a partir del año 200 DC. En las áridas condiciones del desierto, los restos han sido momificados: su cabello, ropa y dientes han permanecido intactos haciendo creer a los arqueólogos que la resina en sus ropas ha sido un factor que ayudó a evitar que los cuerpos se desmoronaran en polvo.
