The Cacao Route is a half-day cultural and experiential tour that takes you into the heart of the Amazonian cacao traditions in Chazuta, a charming village located about one hour from Tarapoto. This immersive experience allows travelers to discover the full journey of cacao, from cultivation to chocolate-making, while engaging with local producers who preserve ancestral techniques. Ideal for families and curious travelers, the tour combines nature, culture, and hands-on learning in a relaxed setting.

Description

Your experience begins with a scenic drive from Tarapoto to Chazuta, passing through lush tropical landscapes and small rural communities. Upon arrival, you will visit a local cacao farm, where expert producers will introduce you to the cultivation process, including different cacao varieties and sustainable agroforestry practices.

You will walk through the plantation while learning about planting, harvesting, fermentation, and drying techniques that are essential to producing high-quality cacao.

The tour continues with a hands-on chocolate workshop led by a local association, where you will participate in the traditional process of making chocolate from raw cacao beans. This includes roasting, peeling, grinding, and molding your own chocolate bar.

Depending on timing, the experience may also include a visit to a local cultural center to learn about traditional pottery, an important artisanal practice in Chazuta.

After completing the activities, you will return to Tarapoto.
