There are a handful of scenic train routes in Peru. The most popular trains connect Cusco with Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
The train that runs between Cusco and Machu Picchu passes some truly incredible scenery — you'll see rivers and mountains as you chug along through the Sacred Valley. These trains offer travelers a unique way to see this beautiful part of Peru.
The second-highest railway in the world runs from Lima to Huancayo. This train passes through the Central Andes and peaks out at an elevation of 15,587 feet (4,751 m). However, the train only has departures once or twice a month and is about a 12-hour ride. Even so, the views are spectacular.
There is also a scenic — albeit slow — train from Cusco to Puno.
If you're traveling during the high season and want to take the train to Machu Picchu, it's best to reserve your tickets online ahead of time. There are several different classes to choose from.
