In 2018, Rwanda transitioned its education system from French to English, and English proficiency has increased significantly, especially among younger Rwandans. Hotel staff, guides, and tourism professionals typically speak excellent English.
Kinyarwanda is the most widely spoken language for everyday communication among Rwandans. French remains common among older generations and in some formal contexts. Many Rwandans are multilingual, speaking two or all three official languages.
Basic Kinyarwanda greetings are appreciated and warmly received. "Muraho" (hello), "Murakoze" (thank you), and "Amakuru?" (how are you?) are easy to learn and demonstrate respect for local culture.
