Hopkins Bay

Hopkins is a center for Garífuna culture. The Garífuna are of West African descent, and that heritage is most visible in their musical traditions and cuisine. Visitors to Hopkins should be sure to see a drum performance while they’re in the area. From the hotel you can walk to several restaurants where you can sample Garífuna cuisine and fresh seafood. There are several national parks in the area that are worth a visit. You can take a short drive to Mayflower Bocawina National Park to look for rare bird species to see the dramatic plunge of the Mayflower Waterfall. Further west you can visit Cockscomb Basin Reserve, and go on a hike through one of the most successful jaguar preserves in the world. Hopkins Bay is also in a convenient spot for arranging fishing and scuba trips around the many reefs in the area.

The lofts are on the second floor of the main building. While you’re staying in a loft you can help yourself to a drink at the minibar. These lofts are decorated to feel more like a beach house than a hotel room.

Lofts and guesthouses have sitting areas with flat screen TVs. The private bathrooms come with hair dryers and bathrobes. Store any valuables – laptops, a passport, etc., in the safety deposit boxes. Ask the staff if you want to use an iron or an ironing board.

Hopkins Bay has two-bedroom guesthouses that have open floor plans. For a larger group, book a 3-bedroom guesthouse. These have a total of 13,000 square feet (120 sq m). Guesthouses have high ceilings and local art make them feel both upscale and homey. Each house has stone detailing, hardwood floors, and granite countertops.

All of the accommodations have good views of the landscaped gardens and the beach. Accommodations here have air conditioning and ceiling fans. Help yourself to a refreshing drink – your room will come with free filtered water and a coffee maker.

Guesthouses also come with kitchens. The kitchens have cooking utensils, a dishwasher, a microwave, a refrigerator and a stove. If you want, you can arrange for an in-house cook to come to your guesthouse and prepare you a delicious, traditional meal. Hopkins Bay hotel has its own restaurant that specializes in Garífuna food, as well as a bar that serves cocktails made with local ingredients.
