Belize Entry Requirements

Since the best time to go to Belize is almost any time of year (even the rainy season is still pleasantly warm, and doesn't prevent you from enjoying aquatic activities), your biggest concern will be gaining entry into the country.

To enter Belize, you must have proof of onward or return travel (such as a plane ticket). You must also have proof of sufficient travel funds, although this is rarely checked. Travelers who plan to go to Belize for purposes other than tourism, or those who want to stay longer than 30 days, must obtain a visa.

If you want to stay longer than 30 days for tourism and are already in the country, you can request a one-month extension from a Belize Immigration Office, which are scattered across the country. Another option is to simply cross the border into another country and then return into Belize with a stamp that’s good for another 30 days.

Do note that if you’re traveling with small children, you may be asked by officials to show birth certificates for each child.

How long can you stay in Belize?

Up to 30 days on arrival. Citizens of the U.S., Canada, the UK and the EU don't need a visa for a tourist trip, and Belize grants visitors a one-month stay from the date of entry. To stay longer, apply at any Belize Immigration office before your permit runs out: each Visitor's Permit Extension adds 30 days and costs BZ$200 (US$100), the same fee for every nationality.

Belize's own minimum passport validity is short, but some airlines refuse boarding with less than six months left, so travel with six. Officers can ask for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Travelers from countries that normally need a visa can visit for up to 30 days without one if they hold a valid multiple-entry U.S. or Schengen visa, or a U.S. permanent-residence card. Do you pay a departure tax when leaving Belize?

Yes. Belize charges an international airport departure fee of US$55.50, payable only in U.S. currency. When you leave by air it is usually included in the airfare, so check the taxes and fees on your fare before paying anything at the airport.

Leaving overland, the departure fee at any land border is US$20 per person, and the same US$20 applies when you leave by boat for an international destination, such as the water taxis to Guatemala or Honduras.
