This tour starts very early in the morning, to ensure you’ll catch the birds at their most active. It’s worth getting up to see these stunning creatures in their natural environment, alongside an expert guide who can fill you in on the most interesting facts about Cusco’s native birds.

Your guides will pick you up from your hotel at 4:30 and make the 30-minute drive to the Huacarpay Lake. There, you’ll observe birds among the totora — the strong that grow from the bottom of the lake. This birding hotspot offers the chance to see species particular to South America, including the Andean gull, the Andean teal, and the Andean lapwing. If you’re especially lucky, you might spot the rare white-backed stilt. Altogether, there are around 70 different species of bird that live here.

At 8 AM, you’ll pause your wildlife observation for a picnic breakfast. Afterward, you’ll drive back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 10:30 AM.

What to Bring

Binoculars, warm clothes, a camera, hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers, and a rain coat if it's the rainy season (December to April).

Take this tour to see the beautiful scenery that surrounds Cusco, as well as a few of the lesser-known archeological sites in the area. You’ll go on a road trip through the mountains and take in incredible views of the rivers and valleys that shaped the Inca’s territory. This is also an excellent jaunt for bird watching, and you’ll stop at overlooks where you can see the majestic Andean condor take flight.
