What Should I Bring to Rwanda?
Packing for Rwanda requires preparation for varied climates and activities, particularly if gorilla trekking is on your itinerary. Layers are essential due to temperature variations between lowland and highland areas.

For gorilla trekking, essential items include sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, long pants (to protect against stinging nettles), long-sleeved shirts, a waterproof rain jacket, and gardening or leather gloves for gripping vegetation. The trek can be muddy regardless of season.
Pack warm layers for early mornings and higher elevations, as temperatures in Volcanoes National Park can be quite cool. A fleece jacket and light down layer are recommended. At lower elevations like Akagera, lighter clothing suffices.
Other essentials include high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent with DEET, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and binoculars for wildlife viewing. Bring a small daypack for carrying essentials during activities.
Camera equipment should include extra batteries and memory cards. Flash photography is prohibited during gorilla treks, so lenses suited to low-light forest conditions are advantageous.
