Entebbe

Entebbe first entered global headlines when an Israeli rescue operation freed more than 100 hostages at its international airport in 1976. The city sits on a peninsula that reaches into Lake Victoria, about 36 kilometres southwest of Kampala in Uganda. It once served as the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda before independence in 1962, and it still houses State House, the official office and residence of the Ugandan president. Entebbe’s blend of diplomatic history and lakeside setting gives it a character that few other Ugandan towns share.

More about Entebbe

The lakefront includes a jetty that still welcomes Lake Victoria ferries, offering views of the water that frame the city’s tropical rainforest climate. July brings the coolest average temperature of 20.6 °C, while February peaks at 22.8 °C, and rainfall ranges from a dry month of 72 mm to a wet month of 264 mm.

Visitors can wander the National Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1898, where mature trees and curated flower beds line winding paths. Adjacent to the gardens, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre functions as the national zoo, presenting native species in a compact setting. Golf enthusiasts find the Entebbe Golf Club, established in 1900 and described as the oldest course in East Africa, nestled beside the centre’s southern edge. The historic site at Kigungu marks where the first Catholic missionaries, Brother Amans and Father Mon Maple Lourdel, landed to begin their work in Uganda. Academic life centers on Nkumba University, one of more than thirty licensed tertiary institutions in the country.

Beyond leisure, Entebbe International Airport remains a focal point for national and international events, having seen Queen Elizabeth II’s departure in 1952 and the final resolution talks that ended the M23 rebellion. The city’s enduring link to a dramatic rescue operation continues to define its place in modern history.
