How Do I Get a Gorilla Trekking Permit in Rwanda?
Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 USD per person and are required for all treks in Volcanoes National Park. Only 96 permits are issued daily, with each of the twelve habituated gorilla groups receiving a maximum of eight visitors.

Due to limited availability, booking permits well in advance is essential, particularly for travel during the dry seasons (June to September and December to February). Peak season permits should be reserved six to twelve months ahead. Your travel consultant can secure permits through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
The permit fee contributes directly to gorilla conservation, community development, and anti-poaching efforts. While Rwanda's permits are more expensive than those in Uganda or the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda offers advantages including easier accessibility from Kigali, well-habituated gorilla groups, and excellent infrastructure.
Travel insurance covering gorilla trekking is mandatory. You'll need to present your passport and permit on trekking day. Treks begin early morning and can last from one to six hours depending on gorilla locations, with one hour spent with the gorillas once located.
