Is Malaria a Risk in Rwanda?
Yes, malaria is present throughout Rwanda, including in Kigali and all national parks. All travelers should take antimalarial medication and use protective measures against mosquito bites.

The risk is highest in lowland areas such as Akagera National Park and around Lake Kivu, but malaria-carrying mosquitoes exist even at higher elevations in Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest.
Consult a travel health specialist before departure to obtain appropriate antimalarial medication. Start taking medication before arrival as directed (timing varies by medication type) and continue after leaving Rwanda as prescribed.
Beyond medication, prevention measures are essential. Apply insect repellent containing at least 20% DEET to exposed skin, particularly during evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Wear long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk. Luxury lodges provide mosquito nets and often have screened accommodations.
If you develop a fever during or after your trip, seek medical attention promptly and inform the healthcare provider of your travel to a malaria-endemic area.
