Are Credit Cards Accepted in Rwanda?
Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at upmarket hotels, lodges, and some restaurants in Kigali. However, Rwanda remains primarily a cash-based economy, and card acceptance is limited outside major establishments.

Luxury lodges and safari camps typically accept credit cards, though some may add a surcharge of 3-5% for card payments. American Express is rarely accepted, and when it is, additional fees often apply.
Cash is essential for tips, local markets, smaller restaurants, and any transactions outside tourist establishments. ATMs in Kigali dispense Rwandan Francs, and most accept international Visa and Mastercard debit cards.
Visa payment at land borders (as opposed to Kigali airport) may require cash in U.S. dollars, as card facilities are not always available at border crossings. Plan your cash needs accordingly.
