Tanga and Pangani

Tanga is on the Indian Ocean near the Kenyan border and is the most northerly port city in Tanzania. Tanga’s recorded history dates back to the 1500s when the Portugese first established a trading post in this area, which was then taken over by the Sultanate of Oman in the 18th century and continued as a trading post for ivory and slaves. In 1891, the Germans purchased a strip of coastal mainland from the Sultan of Zanzibar which included Tanga and set up the colony of German East Africa. Tanga’s port and the surrounding area, including the lush and fertile Usambara Mountains, became the administrative centre of the new German colony. The British gained control of Tanganyika after World War I until its independence in 1961.

More about Tanga and Pangani

Throughout its colonial history, the main source of Tanga’s economic wealth was sisal. Tanga was the world’s top producer and exporter of sisal until independence, when nationalization of agricultural practices by the government collapsed the industry. Ruins of mosques, tombs, and residences of the first Shirazi dating back to the 15th century still remain in Tongoni. Along the main highway, look out the ruins to see old Sisal plantations.

Today, Tanga is Tanzania’s fourth largest city with a population of approximately 270,000 based on 2012 census. Often overlooked by tourists for the much more popular Zanzibar, it is a sleepy colonial town with a laidback local atmosphere. The town offers visitors an authentic experience of Tanzanian culture and is often used as the starting point for excursions to East Usambara Mountains, Amboni Caves and many of the coastal beach resorts, in particular Pangani located approximately 31 miles (50km) south of Tanga.

The many fishing villages dotting the coast are modest and will provide visitors with a glimpse of the simple and relaxed lifestyle of the locals. There are numerous beach resorts both north and south of Tanga, mostly small scale and considerably less expensive than comparable properties in Zanzibar. Tanga’s beaches are not as beautiful as the powdery, white sand beaches of Zanzibar and there are no large scale luxury resorts. Activities offered at most of the beach lodges include diving, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, beach walks, boating, fishing, and local village visits.

The quaint town of Pangani is located 31 miles (50km) south of Tanga at the mouth of the Pangani River as it empties into the Indian Ocean. Similarly to Tanga, it was once a thriving center of the ivory and slave trade in the 18th and 19th century. Historic sites serve as a reminder of Arabic, German, and British colonial rule.

Pangani is still a sleepy backwater town, but in recent years, the area has seen a rapid growth in lodges and resorts opening up along the beaches south of Tanga River. The lodges in Pangani are informal retreats for mid-range and budget travellers. Pangani is recommended for individuals looking for a peaceful and less expensive alternative to Zanzibar.

Tanga’s (and Pangani’s) climate is typical of the tropics, with high temperatures and some rainfall year round. The best times along the coast are from June to October and from December to March when there mostly sunny days with little rain. During November the wind patterns change and generally more rain is expected. April and May receive heavy, continuous rain and most lodges close during these months.

Tanga can be reached by paved road from Arusha (approximately 6 hours) and Dar Es Salaam (approximately 5 hours). There is also a small airport with regular scheduled flights linking Tanga and Pangani to major cities and towns.
