Where Is Tanzania?

Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. The Indian Ocean forms its eastern boundary, where the famous Zanzibar archipelago lies just offshore.

Where Is Tanzania? Image

Tanzania occupies a strategic position in East Africa, straddling the equator and encompassing some of the continent's most iconic landscapes. The country includes the famous Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 meters.

The mainland, formerly known as Tanganyika, united with the island of Zanzibar in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. This union created a country of remarkable geographic and cultural diversity, from the endless savanna of the northern safari circuit to the spice-scented streets of Stone Town.
