Are Credit Cards Accepted in Tanzania?
Credit cards are accepted at upscale hotels, safari lodges, and some restaurants in major cities, with Visa being most widely accepted. However, Tanzania remains largely a cash-based economy, particularly outside urban areas.

High-end lodges and hotels typically accept credit cards, though a surcharge of 3-5% may apply. Confirm payment options when booking, as some properties are cash-only or have unreliable card processing.
ATMs are available in major cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Stone Town, dispensing Tanzanian Shillings. However, once you leave for safari, there are no ATMs in national parks or at remote lodges. Withdraw sufficient cash before departing for your safari.
We recommend bringing U.S. dollars in cash for tips, incidentals, and backup, plus a credit card for larger expenses where accepted. Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid card blocks.
