Forex bureaus (currency exchange offices) in Kampala offer competitive rates and are generally reliable. Banks also exchange currency but may have longer queues and shorter hours. Entebbe airport has exchange facilities, though rates are less favorable than in Kampala.
ATMs are widely available in Kampala and Entebbe, dispensing Ugandan shillings. Some ATMs at major banks (Stanbic, Standard Chartered) also dispense US dollars. Withdrawals are subject to daily limits, and your bank may charge international transaction fees.
Once you leave Kampala, assume you won't find ATMs or exchange services until you return. Safari lodges cannot exchange currency. Calculate how much local currency you'll need for tips, drinks, curios, and incidentals, and obtain it before departing the capital.
