How Much Do Gorilla Permits Cost in Uganda?
Gorilla tracking permits in Uganda cost $800 USD per person for the standard experience. This is the largest single expense for most Uganda visitors, but the encounter with mountain gorillas is extraordinary.
The $800 permit fee goes to Uganda Wildlife Authority and contributes to gorilla conservation, community development, and park management. Permits allow one hour with a habituated gorilla group after locating them—the trek to find them varies from one to six or more hours depending on where the gorillas have moved.
Uganda also offers a "Gorilla Habituation Experience" for $1,500 USD, allowing four hours with gorillas still being acclimated to human presence. This is available only in Bwindi's Rushaga sector.
Permits are limited and should be booked well in advance, especially for June-September and December-February. Your safari operator can handle permit booking as part of your package. Cancellation policies apply, so review terms carefully and ensure you have trip insurance.
