Should I Leave Tips in Uganda?
Tipping is customary and expected in Uganda's tourism industry, where many workers earn modest base wages. Generous tips are deeply appreciated and represent a significant income supplement.
Safari guides are the most important tip recipients. The recommended amount is $15-20 USD per person per day for your driver-guide. For gorilla trekking, tip your guide separately and also the gorilla trackers and porters (if you use them)—typically $10-20 USD per group for trackers and a few dollars per porter.
At lodges, tip housekeeping ($5 USD per night), waitstaff ($2-5 USD per meal), and contribute to staff tip boxes where available. For boat pilots, rangers who accompany you, and other service providers, $5-10 USD is appropriate.
Tips are best given in cash, either US dollars or Ugandan shillings. Small denominations are helpful. Some lodges have tip envelopes available. At the end of your safari, a personalized thank-you note accompanying your guide's tip is a thoughtful gesture.
