The Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion is a lovely jungle lodge near Puerto Maldonado. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms comfortable, and the food tasty. What’s not to like?

Puerto Maldonado is a small town in the Peruvian Amazon. The town itself is rather basic, but it lies next to some seriously wild jungle areas. The two nature reserves here protect all kinds of animals, including monkeys, macaws, caimans, and even jaguars (good luck seeing this last one though). The various jungle lodges are scattered outside town in secluded areas.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion is located on what was once a cocoa and rubber plantation. The property is beautiful and provides travelers with easy access to the tropical jungle (and the animals) for which this place is known. All guests are picked up at the airport and taken to the hotel’s Butterfly House before heading to the jungle lodge on a large motorized canoe.

The accommodations consist of both rooms and bungalows. All have private bathrooms with hot water showers and organic toiletries. The beds are comfortable and set hypoallergenic pillows and mosquito nets. The bungalows are made from local wood products and constructed in local styles. There are enclosed porches with couches and a hammock—it’s supremely pleasant to sit out here and look out over the surrounding jungle. All accommodations also come equipped with a reading lamp, cotton bathrobes, and ceiling fan.

The main lodge has lounges where guests can read, chat, or sip cocktails. These areas are comfortable and have excellent views of the surrounding area. The hotel offers daily excursions, including pre-dinner hikes and post-dinner boat excursions. The guides are friendly and informative, and help guests spot wild animals.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. The meals are tasty and made with local ingredients—there are lots of fruits and veggies, pastas, salads, quinoa, lentils, beef, chicken, and fish. All buffets include vegetarian options. The delicious desserts are made using locally grown Brazil nuts and chocolate. Drinks can be ordered from the hotel’s bar, which has a nightly happy hour from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion provides free transportation to and from the airport in Puerto Maldonado. There is also luggage storage and laundry service.
