Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, though they can be present throughout the day in shaded or wet areas. Coastal regions and lower-elevation areas generally have higher mosquito populations than the highlands.

To protect yourself, use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin, wear long sleeves and pants during evening hours, and sleep under mosquito nets if provided. Most safari lodges and camps provide nets and take extensive measures to control mosquitoes in and around accommodations.

Clothing in light colors is less attractive to mosquitoes than dark colors. Many travelers find that treating clothing with permethrin before the trip provides additional protection.
