Do I Need to Take Malaria Pills or Get Certain Vaccinations for Tanzania?
Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for travel to Tanzania, as malaria risk exists in most areas below 1,800 meters. Several vaccinations are also recommended, and yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your travel history.

Consult a travel health specialist at least six weeks before departure. Recommended vaccinations typically include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Depending on your itinerary and activities, your doctor may also recommend Hepatitis B, Rabies (especially if you plan extensive wildlife interaction or remote travel), and Meningitis.
Yellow fever vaccination is required only if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with yellow fever risk. The certificate is valid for life. If traveling directly from the United States or Europe without such a transit, it is not required but may be recommended.
For malaria prevention, the choice of prophylaxis depends on your health history and preferences. Common options include Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), doxycycline, and mefloquine. All have different dosing schedules and potential side effects; discuss with your doctor which is best for you.
At higher elevations, including the Ngorongoro Crater rim and Mount Kilimanjaro above 1,800 meters, malaria risk is minimal, but bite avoidance is still recommended.
