Chiang Rai

Set on the flat alluvial plain of the Kok River, a tributary of the Mekong, Chiang Rai lies between the Daen Lao Range to the north and the Phi Pan Nam Range to the south. Four bridges cross the Kok River within the town, linking the south‑north streets. Limestone hills rise to the west and north‑west, their sheer cliffs framing villages of hill‑tribe peoples. The Golden Triangle, the tripoint of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, sits about 55 kilometres north‑east, while the Mekong River lies 60 kilometres south‑west at Chiang Saen.

Historical landmarks cluster near the river. Wat Phra Kaeo, the site of the Emerald Buddha’s discovery, still marks the spot where the chedi cracked. The city pillar, Sadue Mueang, was transferred in 1992 from Wat Klang Wiang to Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, where it now stands as the symbolic “navel” of the city. Visitors can walk along the riverbanks, cross the modest bridges, and explore the limestone‑crowned outskirts that host traditional hill‑tribe settlements. The combination of a jade Buddha’s hidden emergence, river‑lined streets and the nearby tri‑border landscape makes Chiang Rai a place where history and geography intersect in a uniquely tangible way.
