Places you'll stay
Bangkok
The gilded spires of the Grand Palace and the towering silhouette of Wat Arun dominate the Chao Phraya River’s waterfront, instantly marking Bangkok as a city where historic ceremony meets riverine bustle. Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, sits in the central river delta and serves as the nation’s political, economic and cultural hub. With an estimated 11.4 million residents in 2024, the metropolis forms the core of a metropolitan region that houses over 17 million people.
Kanchanaburi
At the meeting point of the Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi rivers, Kanchanaburi town spreads along the northern bank of the Mae Klong. It is a town municipality in Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand, situated roughly 120 km west of Bangkok. In 2017 the town’s population numbered 25,651, reflecting a decline from earlier counts.
Ayutthaya
At the heart of Thailand’s historic core stand the towering prangs of Ayutthaya, their corn‑cob silhouettes marking the ruins of a once‑great capital. The city lies on the lower Chao Phraya Valley in central Thailand and was the seat of the Ayutthaya Kingdom from 1351 until its destruction in 1767. European travellers of the early 16th century listed it among the three great powers of Asia, while Chinese chronicles recorded it as a tributary state, underscoring its former regional prominence.
Sukhothai
The stone silhouettes of Sukhothai Historical Park, where early Thai temples rise amid ancient walls and moats, give the town its most recognizable image. Sukhothai lies in north‑central Thailand, about 427 km north of Bangkok, and serves as the modern centre of the province that once housed the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Its name, derived from Sanskrit for “dawn of happiness,” reflects the city’s historic role in Thai civilization.
Chiang Rai
The city where an earthquake in 1432 split a chedi and revealed the jade figure later known as the Emerald Buddha first entered recorded history. Chiang Rai is the northernmost major city of Thailand, situated in the Mueang Chiang Rai District of Chiang Rai Province. With roughly 70,000 residents it serves as a regional hub while carrying the UNESCO Creative Cities Network designation as a Design City.
Chiang Mai
Twin peaks rise above the city, with Doi Pui topping 1 700 metres and Doi Suthep exceeding 1 600 metres, framing Chiang Mai’s skyline in the Thai highlands. The city lies about 700 km north of Bangkok, occupying a basin on the Ping River in northern Thailand. With roughly 127 000 residents inside its municipal limits and an urban population of about 1.2 million, it serves as the provincial capital and a cultural hub.
Moments to look forward to
Grand Palace Bangkok
The Grand Palace in Bangkok rises from the banks of the Chao Phraya River as an ornate royal complex first erected in 1782, and it stands as the centerpiece of Thailand’s capital. Its original purpose as the monarch’s residence imbues the site with a historic gravitas that still shapes the visitor experience. Today the palace functions as a museum, inviting the public to wander through its historic rooms. The complex occupies a central position in the city, offering easy access for those exploring the capital.
