The city sits on the Khorat Plateau, a broad expanse of red‑soil fields that stretch toward the Mun River, and it serves as the main gateway to the highlands of Isan and the nearby Khao Yai National Park. With a population of just over 250 000, Korat blends modern transport hubs with centuries‑old stonework.

Surin
Surin is the province where roughly a quarter of Thailand’s elephants are raised, a practice maintained largely by the ethnic Kuy people. It lies in the lower northeastern region known as Isan, bordering Cambodia to the south and the provinces of Buriram, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et and Sisaket. The provincial capital, Surin city, sits about 434 km from Bangkok and serves as the administrative centre of the area.

At Thailand’s easternmost tip, Khong Chiam marks the point where the Mekong River brushes the national border. The district belongs to Ubon Ratchathani province in the northeast of the country and carries a name that hints at a historic association with large elephant herds. Its location on the Mekong makes it a natural gateway to the Laotian provinces of Salavan and Champasak.

From its riverfront on the Mekong, Nakhon Phanom offers a view of the limestone peaks that rise on the opposite Laotian bank. The provincial capital sits in Thailand’s upper northeastern region, directly across the water from Khammouan Province in Laos. Though its name means “city of mountains,” the mountains themselves belong to the Lao side, making the skyline a defining backdrop for the town.

The UNESCO World Heritage Ban Chiang archaeological site, with its ancient bronze artifacts, lies just outside Udon Thani and defines the region’s prehistoric reputation. Udon Thani is a city on Thailand’s Isan plateau, about 560 km northeast of Bangkok, and serves as a transport hub for the surrounding rice‑fields and rubber plantations. With a population of roughly 160 000, it blends modern infrastructure with a landscape of red‑soil hills that stretch toward the Mekong River.
