Krabi
The sheer limestone cliffs that rise from the sands of Railay Beach draw climbers from across the globe. Krabi is the main town of Krabi Province on Thailand’s western Andaman Sea coast, where the Krabi River empties into Phang Nga Bay. With a 2020 population of 32,644, the town serves as a gateway to a coastline dotted with more than 80 islands.
More about Krabi
Facing the Andaman Sea, Krabi experiences a tropical monsoon climate with a ten‑month rainy season from March to December; the highest recorded temperature reached 39.6 °C on 31 March 2023 and the lowest fell to 15.3 °C on 11 January 2009. The province’s protected areas include Hat Noppharat Thara‑Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, the popular beach resorts of Ao Nang and Railay, and the world‑renowned islands of Ko Phi Phi. Ko Lanta National Park protects coral‑fringed islands, the largest of which, Ko Lanta Yai, hosts the sea‑gypsy community known as “Chao Le” and serves as the park headquarters. Inland, Khao Phanom Bencha and Than Bokkhorani National Parks offer waterfalls, caves and trekking routes for bird‑watchers and eco‑tourists.
Railay’s limestone faces, marked by pockets and overhangs, host several climbing schools and the annual Rock and Fire Festival in mid‑April, while deep‑water soloing is popular on nearby rocky islets reachable by long‑tail boat. Kayaking, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving thrive around the archipelago, and the Fossil Shell Beach at Ban Laem Pho displays fossilized snail shells from a 40‑million‑year‑old freshwater swamp. The combination of dramatic cliffs, vibrant climbing culture and a calendar of outdoor festivals makes Krabi’s coastal landscape uniquely memorable.
