The twin towns of Flores and Santa Elena are located along the shores of Lake Petén Itzá. Santa Elena is the larger of the two, but it is Flores that typically gets the attention of travelers. Flores is set on an island in the lake and is connected to the mainland by a small causeway. It’s a charming and attractive place, with old buildings, good restaurants, and cobblestone streets. Outside of this area, travelers can go kayaking, rent mountain bikes, or enjoy hiking in nearby forests.
Hotel Casona del Lago is located in Santa Elena along the water. Flores is a short walk away via a small bridge. This hotel has comfortable rooms and Caribbean-inspired architecture.
The hotel’s rooms are clean and spacious. They are fairly simple, but all feature a private bathroom with a hot water shower. The temperature is kept comfortable with air conditioning and ceiling fans, and there is cable TV and free wireless Internet available. All rooms also come equipped with a desk and telephone. Large common balconies extend outside the rooms and offer up good views of the pool and lake. The rooms can sleep up to three people.
The indoor restaurant is pleasant and serves a variety of food. Breakfast is included and there are options like eggs, bacon, and French toast on the menu. There is also a bar that is stocked with an assortment of beer, wine, and liquor.
During the day guests can cool off in the hotel’s swimming pool, which looks out over Lake Petén Itzá. A small Jacuzzi adjoins the pool—this is a pleasant place to relax in the evening after a visit to Flores or Tikal.
Other services at Hotel Casona del Lago include laundry service, safety deposit boxes, and parking. Wireless Internet is available throughout the hotel. There are also a few conference rooms that guests are invited to use for weddings, business meetings, or special events—collectively, these rooms can hold up to 300 people.
