La Antigua is one of the most delightful cities in Guatemala. Antigua was the capital of Guatemala until an earthquake rocked the city in 1773 and the capital was moved 28 miles (45 km) away to Guatemala City. Antigua was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and these days is one of Guatemala’s most charming towns. There are excellent museums, restaurants and shops here, as well as cultural attractions like old churches and colonial ruins. Outside the city, travelers can hike volcanoes or go mountain biking.

Despite being just four blocks from the central plaza, Casa Encantada feels far removed from the bustle of the city. This lovely boutique hotel offers guests a relaxing environment in the heart of the city. The architecture is rustic yet elegant, and the décor is undeniably charming.

Casa Encantada spreads out around a central courtyard and a small swimming pool. Lounge chairs line the courtyard and offer up a nice spot to soak up sun or read. If you need to cool off during the afternoon, pop on your bathing suit and hit the pool. There is also a pleasant indoor lounge set with fresh white flowers and over-sized candles. This is a great place to use the wifi or chat over a glass of wine in the evening.

There is a rooftop terrace where you can eat a delicious Guatemalan breakfast and enjoy fabulous views of the surrounding area. Casa Encantada has ten individually decorated guest rooms. Although no two rooms are the same, all rooms are appointed with beautiful furnishings and local handicrafts, including colorful huipiles (traditional blouses worn by indigenous women).

The rooms have beds with high quality mattresses, down comforters, and fine linens. Double paned windows ensure that rooms remain quiet. All rooms have a private hot water bathroom, flat-screen TV, safe deposit box, ceiling fan, and wireless Internet access. Some rooms have a mini-fridge and a bathroom with a walk-in shower, bathrobes, and Italian toiletries. The master suite at Casa Encantada is especially nice—it features a sitting area with easy chairs, ottomans, and a fireplace.
