La Antigua is a charming colonial city situated in a valley surrounded by three volcanoes. It was the former capital of Guatemala until an earthquake destroyed the city in 1773. Antigua was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and today is one of Guatemala’s most popular destinations. You can stroll through the central plaza and enjoy a colorful procession of people or visit one of the many 18th-century churches that populate the city. Outside Antigua, you can hike the Agua and Acatenango volcanoes or mountain bike along forested trails.
With just seven rooms, Posada del Angel is intimate. The hotel, which occupies an original Spanish house, is located on a quiet cobblestone street a few blocks from the main plaza. It is beautifully decorated with thoughtful, elegant touches—there are candles lining the hallway in the evening and wood fires prepared in guest rooms some nights. The staff here is friendly and personable. They work hard to ensure that all guests have a pleasant stay.
Each of the seven rooms is unique and individually decorated. The rooms were designed with a color palette that was inspired by the famous wall textures of Antigua. Beds are covered with Mayan textiles made from high-quality cotton and traditional techniques. Carved wooden sculptures, ceramic pieces, flowers, and candles all create a warm atmosphere.
The rooms are spacious and have comfortable beds, sitting areas, and a fireplace. All have a private hot water bathroom and wireless Internet access. Some rooms have separate bathtubs and showers as well as a private outdoor terrace where you can enjoy breakfast. Some rooms look out on the garden, while others overlook the swimming pool. All rooms are the definition of cozy.
There are many other places to relax at Posada del Angel. The outdoor living room is a perfect place to take refuge from the sun during warm days or cuddle up by the fireplace during the colder months. If you’re hankering for a view of the city, check out the rooftop terrace. You can relax up here or have breakfast while looking out at three volcanoes. Posada del Angel also has a lap pool where you can cool off or exercise. The pool is heated by solar panels.
Every morning the staff at Posada del Angel serves a free breakfast that includes freshly squeezed juice, tropical fruit, eggs, refried beans, and homemade tortillas.
