What Are The Roads Like in Laos?
Road conditions in Laos vary considerably, from well-paved highways connecting major cities to rough, unpaved routes in rural areas. The wet season can further challenge road conditions.

Main highways such as Route 13 connecting Vientiane, Vang Vieng, and Luang Prabang are paved and generally in good condition. However, even major roads can have sections of construction or damage, and winding mountain passes require careful navigation.
Secondary roads and routes to more remote attractions may be unpaved, narrow, and challenging, particularly during the wet season when landslides and flooding can occur. Travel after dark is not recommended due to poor lighting and road hazards.
For most travelers, we recommend private transfers with experienced local drivers rather than self-driving. Drivers know current road conditions, can navigate unexpected situations, and allow you to enjoy the scenic journey without stress.
