Places you'll stay
Hanoi
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is a city where ancient traditions and modern life exist side by side. Located along the banks of the Red River, it is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest capitals, with a history that stretches back over a thousand years. Founded in 1010 under the Ly Dynasty, Hanoi was originally named Thang Long, meaning “Ascending Dragon.” Over centuries, it has witnessed periods of Chinese domination, Vietnamese independence, French colonial rule, and modern development, each leaving a distinct mark on the city’s identity. Today, Hanoi stands as a cultural and political heart of Vietnam, where history is not just preserved in museums but lives on in its streets, architecture, and daily life.
Ha Long Bay
The name Ha Long means “descending dragon” – a fitting title for a bay steeped in mystical legends and boasting scenery to match. There are countless tales of how and why the name came about. One of the most well-known tells of a dragon that came down from the sky, spitting thousands of pearls from its fiery mouth, which became the islets and karsts that now dot the bay.
Vientiane
The golden stupa of Pha That Luang dominates Vientiane’s skyline, its 45‑metre height visible from the Mekong River that skirts the city’s western edge. Vientiane serves as the capital of Laos, lying on the banks of the Mekong close to the Thai border, and it hosts roughly 840,000 residents according to the 2023 census. The city’s layout spreads across five urban districts that blend colonial remnants with Buddhist monuments.
Vang Vieng
Towering limestone karsts rise around the Nam Song River, framing the town of Vang Vieng in central Laos. The settlement, about 130 km north of Vientiane on Route 13, grew from a 1353 staging post into a centre for backpackers drawn to river tubing and rock climbing. During the Vietnam War an airstrip called Lima site 6 was built nearby; its concrete runway remains visible between the main street and the highway. Today the main street is lined with guest houses, bars, restaurants, internet cafés and tour agencies that serve the steady flow of adventure tourists.
Luang Prabang
At sunrise each day, a line of monks in saffron robes walks through the streets of Luang Prabang to receive alms offered by local residents. The town serves as the historic capital of Luang Prabang Province in north‑central Laos and displays a mix of Lao architecture, French colonial buildings, and more than thirty Buddhist temples. In 1995 the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for this unique cultural landscape. The protected heritage zone includes 33 of the town’s 58 villages, where traditional rituals continue alongside everyday life.
