Is It Easy To Get a Sunburn In Uganda?
Despite Uganda's location on the equator, the country's elevation moderates temperatures but not UV intensity. Sun exposure at high altitudes can be particularly intense, and sunburn can occur even on overcast days.

UV radiation is strong throughout Uganda, especially at higher elevations like Bwindi or the Rwenzori Mountains. The thinner atmosphere at altitude allows more UV rays through, and cloud cover provides less protection than many travelers expect.
During safari activities, you may spend hours in open vehicles or on boat cruises with limited shade. On gorilla treks, the forest canopy provides natural protection, but the approach to the forest and any open areas expose you to direct sun.
We recommend bringing SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen frequently, especially after sweating. Long-sleeved, lightweight clothing provides additional protection and is also recommended for insect protection.
