Hol Chan
Un paseo rápido a la Reserva Marina Hol Chan, hace que está excursión de medio día sea la más popular entre los turistas que se alojan en Cayo Ambergris y Cayo Caulker. Establecida en 1987, está reserva tiene una extensión de 3 millas cuadradas (7,8 kilómetros cuadrados) y se encuentra en el extremo sur de Cayo Ambergris. Como resultado, esta zona de la Barrera de Coral de Belice apoya a las poblaciones saludables de peces y corales coloridos. Dentro de las especies que podrá observar se encuentran las tortugas, tiburones nodriza, mero, jurel negro y las barracudas. El rango del arrecife es entre 10-30 pies (3-9 m) de profundidad y la mayoría de los guías llevan a los visitantes a lo largo del borde exterior del arrecife. Hol Chan es un canal natural de 30 pies (9 m de profundidad) en la barrera de coral. Los mayas apodaron esta formación como Hol Chan, lo cual se traduce como “Canal Pequeño.” Esta ruptura permite a las corrientes oceánicas barrer los nutrientes hacia el interior de la laguna del arrecife, atrayendo así a una serie de la vida marina de la zona. Mantenga sus ojos alerta para ver morenas, tiburones nodriza y meros negros.
La popularidad de este sitio significa que usted no estará solo en el arrecife. Desde San Pedro, el paseo por el arrecife está a menos de 20 minutos, donde cada día decenas de barcos amarran las boyas que se han instalado en el sitio. La mayoría de los tours se combinan con una parada en Shark Ray Alley.
