On this tour, you’ll learn how the workers harvest and prepare the beans. Coffee beans get sorted, fermented, washed, and dried. The Chicoj plantation has incorporated the local Q’eqchi farming techniques into their process. As part of the tour, you’ll get a cup of the local brew – guaranteed to be one of your most memorable sips of coffee.
You’ll see the bright, red-and-green coffee berries, which grow in a dense conifer forest. Cardamom pods also grow on the plantation, and perfume the grounds with their spicy aroma.
After the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to zip-line through the plantation canopy. This quick ride will take you over a small, manmade lagoon. On your way, you’ll get a closer look at the enormous trees that grow in the plantation’s steamy, tropical environment.
This farm started as a farming cooperative run by German families. In the 1960s, Chicoj plantation became the property of the Guatemalan government. Since the 1980s, the plantation has provided employment opportunities to the Q’eqchi community.
After the tour, you can visit the plantation’s handicraft shop. You’ll find jewelry and other souvenirs made from coffee beans. All of the items are handmade.
