Lake Petén Itzá is the second largest lake in Guatemala. The surrounding area is tranquil and absolutely gorgeous. Several small towns – like San Andrés and San José – line the shores of the lake and offer up interesting places to visit for the day, including the towns of The town of El Remate is a nice place to hang out, swim, and relax. It’s also close to the Biotopo Cerro Cahuí, which has great birding and hiking.
The Camino Real Tikal is a 72-room resort set along the shores of Lake Petén Itzá. The setting – with tropical grounds and views of the lake – couldn’t be better. This hotel provides some of the lake’s most comfortable accommodations and has great facilities, including a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, swimming pool, and sauna.
The rooms are clean and have nice beds and air conditioning. They have thatched-roof ceilings and balconies with views of the lake or garden. These balconies are a great place to relax and take in the tropical sights and sounds. All rooms come equipped with a cable TV, telephone, mini-bar, and safety deposit box.
Guests are welcomed with a smile and a drink. There is no shortage of things to do while staying at the Camino Real Tikal. The ruins of Tikal are about a 45-minute drive, and there are a number of activities that guests can enjoy at the hotel.
The swimming pool is nice and refreshing (especially after a day at the ruins), and there is also a Jacuzzi and sauna if you want to warm up in the evening. Guests can rent kayaks and paddle around the lake, or else tour the lake on a ship. There is also a basic open-air gym where guests can exercise. Of course, a tempting option is to simply swing in the hammocks by the lake.
The restaurant is divided into an open-air, thatched-roof portion and an indoor, air-conditioned section. There is a delicious breakfast buffet and a number of good meals for lunch and dinner. The gourmet menu combines local and international flavors and serves up a tasty variety cuisine. Room service and catering is also available.
Drinks can be enjoyed at the hotel’s bar, which is stocked with a range of national and international beer, wine, and liquor. While sipping a specialty cocktail, you can enjoy a game of darts or pool.
