Are Credit Cards Accepted in Laos?
Laos remains primarily a cash-based economy. While credit cards are accepted at upscale hotels, some restaurants, and larger tour operators in major cities, cash is essential for most transactions.

Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, primarily at higher-end establishments in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. American Express has limited acceptance. Even where cards are accepted, a surcharge of 2-3% may be applied.
ATMs are available in major cities and tourist areas, dispensing Lao Kip. Most machines accept international Visa and Mastercard. However, ATM withdrawal limits are typically low (1-2 million LAK per transaction, or approximately $50-100), and local bank fees of 20,000-40,000 LAK per transaction apply. BCEL bank ATMs often offer better rates and higher limits.
We recommend bringing a combination of US Dollars in cash (crisp, unmarked bills dated 2009 or newer) for exchanging, plus cards for ATM withdrawals and upscale establishments. Always inform your bank of your travel dates to avoid card blocks.
