Río Dulce is both a town and a river. The town is nondescript, but the river and the surrounding jungle are beautiful. The river flows from Lake Izabal to the Caribbean Sea, emptying near the town of Lívingston. The river valley is wild and tropical. It’s a good place to swim, kayak or just relax, as there usually aren’t tons of other travelers here. La Cueva de La Vaca is an impressive canyon lined with hundred-meter rock faces. At the Chocón Machacas Biotope, travelers can sometimes spot manatees.

The Hacienda Tijax Hotel is fairly close to the town of Río Dulce (the bridge crossing over the river is not far away), but is still far enough away to feel tranquil and secluded.

The Hacienda Tijax Hotel is nestled along the Río Dulce. The hotel has a rubber plantation and a nature reserve with trails and hanging bridges that are ideal for hiking and bird watching. There are many things to do here, including horseback riding, hiking, swimming, and sailing. The hotel’s swimming pool is large and surrounded by tropical plants and shaded sitting areas. The Hacienda Tijax Hotel is also a good place to just kick back and relax.

The hotel’s accommodations include cabins, deluxe cabins, and bungalows. These can sleep between 1–7 people and have both private and shared bathrooms available. All are situated in forested areas near the mangroves or creek. They are clean, cute, and comfortable. The beds have mosquito nets and the bathrooms have hot water showers.

Deluxe cabins have a private bathroom and air conditioning. The two-story thatched-roof bungalows are larger and equipped with a kitchen, private bathroom, dining room, and hammocks. With a double bed and two bunk beds (and an optional additional single bed), the bungalows can sleep up to seven people.

The restaurant serves delicious food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can select from a varied menu that includes vegetarian plates, Italian pasta, and gourmet seafood. The two bars – one at the restaurant and one beside the pool – offer a range of refreshing cocktails in a unique jungle setting. The mojitos and margaritas are especially good.

Services that the hotel offers include laundry, email, telephone, and Internet. Hacienda Tijax also has a marina that can accommodate up to 30 boats.
