Meet your guide and driver at your hotel in the early morning to start the two-hour journey to A Luoi. Just 43 miles (70 km) from the royal city of Hue, this rural district was used as a demilitarized zone during the Vietnam War.
Your first stop on the tour will be the 937 Hill where you will take a short hike to take in the views of the airport, combat base, and surrounding countryside. A bloody battle was fought here in May 1969, and it is incredible to imagine the fighting that occurred on the densely forested slopes. Head back down the hill to see the airport and combat base close up, including the remains of a number of US planes. You’ll then spend the night in a hotel in Khe Sanh.
The next morning, you will continue your exploration of the DMZ with tours of the Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River, 17th Parallel Museum and the Vinh Moc tunnels. In the tunnels, you’ll be amazed at the ingenuity of the Northern guerrilla fighters who carved out entire villages underground, safe from bomb attacks. Educated on the horrors of the war and the resilience of the Vietnamese people, you will head back to Hue in the afternoon.
