Phnom Penh
At the meeting point of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers, Phnom Penh rises around the hill crowned by Wat Phnom, the Buddhist shrine that gave the city its name. The capital of Cambodia, it serves as the seat of the monarchy and the nation’s political, economic and cultural hub. With more than two million residents, the city forms the core of a metropolitan area that includes Ta Khmau and parts of Kandal province.
Siem Reap
The ancient stone silhouettes of Angkor rise just a short drive from Siem Reap, making the city the primary gateway for visitors eager to explore the Khmer Empire’s temple complex. Siem Reap sits in northwestern Cambodia as the capital of its namesake province and serves as the country’s second‑largest urban centre. Its reputation as a tourism hub grew after the city was named the ASEAN City of Culture for 2021–2022 at a regional ministers’ meeting in October 2020.
