Construido hace más de 10 000 años, Huaca Pucllana fue usado como un centro ceremonial y administrativo por pescadores y granjeros nómadas.
Hoy, es un distintivo sitio arqueológico, localizado a corta distancia de modernos condominios. En ninguna otra parte es más evidente el contraste entre el Perú antiguo y el moderno.
Nómadas de la antigua cultura de Lima construyeron sus campamentos en el área ahora conocida como Miraflores. Huaca Pucllana era usada para llevar a cabo ceremonias y banquetes. Nómadas de la cultura Wari se habían aventurado hacia Lima y vivieron en proximidad con nómadas de Lima por algún tiempo. Sin embargo, alrededor de 700 años d.C. los Wari tomaron el control y transformaron el sitio en un cementerio para sus miembros de élite.
Las excavaciones en Huaca Pucllana comenzaron en 1967. Los arqueólogos encontraron elaboradas momias Wari envueltas en telas y cerámica decorada con animales. Las impresiones en cerámica más populares fueron las decoradas con imágenes de leones marinos y tiburones las cuales se pueden apreciar en el museo que está ubicado en el lugar. Los maniquíes de arcilla que se encuentran en el sitio recrean las ofrendas rituales que se les hacía a los dioses.
Los Wari creían que quebrar vasijas y sacrificar mujeres y niños ayudaba a mantener la cohesión entre la comunidad. Su guía obligatorio le brindará información valiosa mientras hace el recorrido por las ruinas.
En el sitio hay un restaurante de alta cocina para cuando se sienta listo para disfrutar de una deliciosa comida. Nada como cenar mientras se disfruta de la vista de ruinas de 1 500 años de antigüedad en la ciudad capital de Perú.
