Culinary Delight and Family Adventure
I learned so much about Peru's history and have such respect for its culture. Make reservations at restaurants, especially when it belongs to a famous chef. We also did the prayer ceremony and that was such a spiritual experience for us.
A family adventure in the making…
We’re a group that loves to hike, including my sisters in our 20s to 30s and my dad who is 72 years old. We were interested in Peru because of the opportunity to hike the famous Machu Picchu, but also wanted to enjoy local cuisine and learn about the city’s history. We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing days at Cusco and Lima. We even went to a salsa dancing bar in the square and learned how to salsa. Too much fun! One of our favorite parts of Lima was seeing the city lights at night as well as the colorful fountains. We have so many fantastic photos.
Incredible moments during the trip…
We thoroughly enjoyed our hikes through the Sacred Valley. We did the prayer ceremony and that was such a spiritual experience for us. I recommend doing that. The train ride from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu is so much fun. The Huayna Picchu tour was everything we imagined and more. Our guide was knowledgeable and really took care of us the whole hike.
We knew they had our backs…
Henry, our Anywhere expert, was easy to reach and while travelling in Peru, I kept in touch with him via WhatsApp along with the other tour guides. He was so helpful with my thousand questions and changes in the itinerary. He has a great amount of patience and takes care of you until you go through security on your way home!
Places you'll stay
Lima
The coastal city of Lima is diverse, with colorful parks, friendly locals, tasty cuisine, vibrant markets, and ancient historical attractions. Travelers can tour world-class museums, wander through the colonial architecture of Miraflores, and eat seafood along the Pacific coast.
Urubamba
The town of Urubamba is located in the middle of the Sacred Valley. Despite its central location, the town is mellow and relaxed. It makes for a good home base while exploring Peru’s most beautiful valley.
Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu. Staying here for a night or two will give you intimate access to this incredible Inca site.
Cusco
Nestling in the dip of the Watanay River Valley, from above the city of Cusco takes the shape of a puma, which some historians theorize was a purposeful design. As the city expands, its borders creep up the sides of the surrounding mountains, but puma statues, fountains, and signs keep the big cat’s status of unofficial city mascot.
The Sacred Valley
The first inhabitants of the Sacred Valley treasured this land not only for its dramatic landscapes and sweeping vistas—the Sacred Valley also offered ample opportunities for agriculture, and had plentiful water just beyond the reaches of the parched desert. Its fertility was the result of a sunny climate and the Río Urubamba coursing through the valley.
Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is a busy little Andean village situated at the northeastern end of the Sacred Valley. It’s famous for its Perurail train station (delivering visitors to Machu Picchu), traditional market and impressive Incan ruins.
Chinchero
Chinchero is a peaceful little Andean village situated 18 miles (30 km) from Cusco. It enjoys views of the Sacred Valley and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. The village itself consists of a cluster of adobe house-lined streets where locals maintain their traditional weaving and dress.
Moments to look forward to
Huaca Pucllana
Travelers don't have to trek into the Andes to see vestiges of Peru's ancient civilizations. Lima has a large number of historical ruins, and Huaca Pucllana is one of the best.
Main Square Lima
The Plaza de Armas is the beautiful central square of Lima. Here you will find impressive architecture on all corners and surprises in the adjoining streets. The plaza constitutes the historical center of Lima and is surrounded by magnificent buildings, some of which date back to the 16th century.
Larco Museum
The Larco Museum is one of Lima's most interesting and fun museums. The museum hosts an exciting collection of ceramics, gold, silver, erotic art, and textiles.
Ollantaytambo Fortress
The staggeringly steep Inca ruins at the Ollantaytambo Fortress loom over the north side of the town of Ollantaytambo. They are famous for being one of the few places where the Incas defeated Spanish conquerors in a major battle.
Pisac Market
With both ancient and modern attractions, the charming colonial town of Písac has truly earned its place on the map. It lies 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Cusco on the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. It’s at the base of a mountain that houses the spectacular Inca Písac Fortress.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is the bucket-list tourist attraction and the highlight of many peoples’ trip to Peru; the vastness, location and detail of the ruins make it unmissable. Without a doubt this is the crown jewel of Peruvian ruins.
Chinchero Market
Set within an Andean village in the Sacred Valley, the Chincero market is colorful and interesting. It’s less touristy than the Pisac market but no less impressive.
Salt Mines of Maras
The salt mines of Maras are found in the high plains above Urubamba. These ancient salt mines were created by the Inca and are still in use today.
