Finca Lérida is renowned across Panama for its marvelous bird watching. Set just outside Boquete, Finca Lérida’s extensive property includes coffee plantations and tropical forests. The hotel itself is attractive and comfortable.
Boquete is one of Panama’s best nature destinations. The hills and mountains surrounding the town are cloaked with thick forests that protect an abundance of plants and animals. Hiking and birding can be done in the Barú Volcano National Park. One hike in particular, along the Sendero Los Quetzales, is especially popular. This trail runs through much of the park and leads from Boquete to Cerro Punta (and vice versa). Rafting can be enjoyed on the Río Chiriquí, and there is even a spot to go zip lining above Boquete.
Before Finca Lérida built its ecolodge, it was well known for its coffee and birds. Today, guests can tour the plantation or search for birds and then return to their room and get a good night’s sleep. In addition to the coffee plantation, the property contains some 370 acres (150 ha) of primary and secondary forests. All kinds of creatures – including deer, and tons of birds – live or migrate through these forests. Knowledgeable guides lead guests along trails that wind through the coffee and vegetable plantations. In some areas, especially near the main estate, you may be able to spot a quetzal. Tours of the coffee plantation are also offered. These allow guests to better appreciate the fresh coffee they’ll taste at the end of the tour.
The ecolodge is set on a hill overlooking the property and the surrounding mountains – a beautiful, photogenic place. The ecolodge has eleven rooms. All rooms are on the ground floor and have a front patio that enjoys the same view. The rooms are simply and stylishly decorated. They have hardwood floors, comfortable beds, and good lighting. All have a private bathroom with a hot water shower and access to a common room with a fireplace.
The other rooms are set in the finca’s main house. Originally built in 1917 by a Norwegian engineer, the house has been refurbished and updated. It has a common area with a large stone fireplace and library; this is an extremely pleasant place to relax in the evening. The rooms here are a bit more rustic than the ecolodge, but are still cozy and well equipped. They have Scandinavian décor and private bathrooms with a hot water shower. In addition to these rooms are several suites that offer a more luxurious option. The suites are larger, with a living room and fireplace, cable TV, and a bathroom that has a Jacuzzi tub and shower.
The onsite Monniche Restaurant has an international menu. Offerings include seafood, pasta, meat, soup, salads, sandwiches, and local dishes. There is beer and wine available, and the house coffee is spectacular. You can have it prepared as espresso, drip, or French press.
