Just 40 miles (60 km) outside of metropolitan Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most important historical sites in southern Vietnam. The Cu Chi Tunnels are a network of man-made tunnels and caverns that stretch over 120 miles (200 km). The Viet Cong built them during the Vietnam War and used them for shelter, supply routes, and weapons stores.
The tunnels gave the Northern Vietnamese soldiers a strategic edge to a war they were mostly ill-equipped to fight. This strategy spelled disaster for American troupes.
Today, what is left of the tunnels is open to the public as an open-air museum. It isn’t an easy place to visit and stories from the time are harrowing to hear, but it is somewhere you cannot miss. Exploring the tunnels, you will be astounded by the ingenuity and resilience of the North Vietnamese army.

Traveler Comments
Wow- this is an very humbling trip and so interesting. The children loved the hands on element. It was amazing to be able to actually go in the tunnels- not for the claustrophobic though! Our guide, Mr T, was brilliant at navigating us around and giving us the historical background to these incredible tunnels. He managed to take us around avoiding any crowds and giving us a very detailed overview.
